"Making Rights Real"- President JZ must step down
Lawyers for Human Rights calls on ALL South Africans to support the People’s March which will take place on Friday 07th April 2017. Organisations including Save South Africa are calling on all who are living in South Africa to join this march. We will gather at Church Square in Pretoria from 10am on Friday morning and will march to the Union Building. We need to stand in unity with the call for President Zuma to step down.
The pre-amble to the Constitution of South Africa adopted in 1996 says:
We, the people of South Africa, Recognise the injustices of our past; Honour those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land; Respect those who have worked to build and develop our country; and Believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity. We therefore, through our freely elected representatives, adopt this Constitution as the supreme law of the Republic so as to - Heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights;
The Constitutional Court has ruled that President Zuma has acted unlawfully and has behaved in a way that is inconsistent with the Constitution when he used state funds for his private renovations.
The people’s march on Friday is a call to the government to uphold , defend and respect our constitution. We need a government that is committed to establishing a society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights. We must unite to denounce the looting of scare resources under the leadership of the President.
Lawyers for Human Rights (“LHR”) is an independent human rights organisation with a 37-year track record of human rights activism and public interest litigation in South Africa. Under the repressive apartheid regime, LHR lawyers provided legal support to political prisoners, communities faced with forced removals and actively campaigned against the death penalty. LHR uses the law as a positive instrument for change and to deepen the democratisation of South African society. Making the Constitution a living document!
